About the Department:
The Department of
Geography at Bikali College, affiliated with Gauhati University, has been
committed to academic growth and excellence since its inception in 1984.
Initially offering a Pre-University course, the department expanded to an
undergraduate General course in 1986. Recognizing the growing significance of
Geography and increasing student interest, a Major course was introduced in
1993 with a modest beginning of two faculty members and ten students. By 1994,
the department saw further growth with an increase in both faculty and student
enrollment.
In keeping with its
commitment to academic advancement, the department launched a Postgraduate
program in Geography in 2016 under Gauhati University, with an initial intake
capacity of 10 students per semester. The department has 4 sanctioned post, 1
full time faculty and 2 contratual faculties. Over the years, the department
has continued to evolve, striving to enhance its curriculum, research
activities, and facilities to meet the changing academic and professional
demands in the field of Geography.
Vision: The
Geography Department was established with certain visions. These are as follows:
i.
To foster academic excellence and innovative
research in Geography, addressing regional and global challenges.
ii. To promote geographical literacy by equipping students with analytical and problem-solving skills for real-world applications.
iii. To develop a well-equipped modern laboratory with advanced geospatial technologies, including GIS, Remote Sensing, and Cartography, for hands-on learning.
iv.
To engage with communities and promote
sustainability through field studies, research, and extension activities.
Mission:
The mission of the Department of Geography of Bikali College is to
provide quality education, promote research, and equip students with geospatial
and analytical skills. It aims to address environmental and socio-economic
challenges, foster community engagement, and prepare students for professional
careers and higher education while upholding ethical and sustainable
geographical practices.
