The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a government-sponsored program under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in India. Launched in 1969 to commemorate the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, it strives to involve students in nation-building activities.
NSS’ motto is“Not Me, But You,” which reflects the essence of selfless service and the spirit of helping others for the growth of the larger society.
Objectives of NSS:
- Developing Personality: Foster leadership qualities, teamwork, and social responsibility among students.
- Community Engagement: Promote active participation in addressing community needs and challenges.
- Social Awareness: Cultivate an understanding of social issues and encourage efforts to solve them.
- Skill Development: Enhance students’ skills through hands-on activities and exposure to real-world scenarios.
Structure of NSS Unit, Bikali College:
The unit consists of a Program Officer and students volunteers recruited from UG and PG students at the beginning of each academic year. Activities are then organized at the college and community level.
Activities of NSS:
- Social Welfare Campaigns: Health check-ups, and awareness programs on hygiene, education, and environment.
- Community Development: Cleaning drives, rural development projects, and infrastructure improvement.
- Environmental Conservation: Plantation drives, water conservation initiatives, and waste management awareness.
- National Integration: Programs to promote unity, communal harmony, and cultural exchange.
Benefits of Participating in NSS:
- Participating in NSS activities lead to personal growth of students since they gain leadership skills, empathy and adaptability. It also provides students with the opportunity to contribute to the society. It helps them connect with peers of other institutions.
- Students also receive certificates for service as NSS members and awards and prizes.
